“Best Practices” Under Attack

Best Practices Under Attack

Referring to my Essay #4 in this series:  Cockeyed BC Education

Leveling the Playing Field: Professors Inform Teachers 365/24/7

I’ve been following since 1972 the BCTF capture of the education field in BC. However, a new curve came up which causes me to point to a connection to teachers of teachers guiding the intelligentsia of a new movement.  No wonder this new ideological thrust and its handlers wish to exclude nosy parents and critical newspaper reporters from its inner workings….anyway, my Essay #4 traces a “blurt” — an angry remark from a teacher at their AGM (Mar/09) railing against “best practices” as being an assault on teacher rights and autonomy… I wondered, where did this come from….remembered reading a speech from the UBC Dean of Education, also railing (22 times!) in his presentation against “best practices”….I guess this is in accord with attacks on “evidence-based research” where ideology trumps – ideology first, then we’ll consider “best practices” and “evidence-based research”….The Deans of Canada are signing their own Accord, a family compact (are there any abstainers?) to transform communities through training of teachers to be social and political activists…see Accord:  http://www.csse.ca/CADE/TeacherAccord.pdf

Essay #2: 090421 – Backlash Overdue

For a teacher union, such as the BCTF, to claim it is strictly non-partisan, is a joke….it has strong ideological left leanings and behaves like an industrial trade union….some say it should become a political party, register, and run candidates…or become a church as it expects religious fervor and obedience to its preaching…some locals feel they “have a duty” to inform parents about education issues by sending notes home with students as couriers…there are some very interesting organizations and opinion leaders shining more light on “heavy-handed teacher union organizing and propagandizing”….links provided, See Cockeyed BC Education category

Essay #3: 090419 – School Wars Will continue as Long as Progressives Rule

A young 24 year old trustee, ignoring the profound failures of past socialist systems, readily identifies himself with “progressive politics” in BC. He urges fellow trustees to join TAG (Trustee Action Group), a very BCTF-like organization having as its principal organizer an ex BCTF staff member parachuted into elected trusteeship, bypassing self-identification in campaign literature regarding his BCTF links…This essay brings forward the damage done by progressives in education over the last 50 years and how dumbing-down is a progressive achievement (?)… See Cockeyed BC Education category

Cockeyed BC Education

There are many meanings to “cockeyed”.  Here are a few:
-   bizarre
-    ridiculous
-    absurd
-    wonky
-    lopsided
-    ironic, opposite of what’s intended
-    incongruous, inviting ridicule

Mind you, I did not start out to be funny but something happened to me today in my political campaign which is a prime example of the ridiculous, puzzling, counter-intuitive and caused me to try and make lemonade when handed a bunch of lemons…….

I’m one of six candidates in the West Vancouver-Capilano riding and all-candidate meetings are piling up.  No one’s had trouble reaching me.  They’re all noted on my calendar.

This evening at 8:00 pm I’m reading my North Shore Outlook and I see — OOPS, I’ve missed a meeting.  It started at 7:00 pm, it’s too late to get out of my gardening clothes and rush over all disheveled…so let it pass?  Wait, who’s sponsoring it?  I’ll have to phone them to tell them they missed me somehow.

Well, it’s the two teacher unions on the North Shore.  A bell goes off!  Was I deliberately excluded?  I’m not a fan of the unions, and they don’t appreciate my critiques…

What’s to make of this?  I’m a fighter and I’ve been fighting for education reform for the last 40 years and I’ve never hesitated to point out that teacher unions are the biggest obstacles to meaningful reform and to authentic parent involvement.

By trying to “kill the messenger”, not letting me speak to their meeting, they just might experience some backfire. So, I’m in conspiracy plot over-drive mode…  I’m not one to stop speaking my mind on what’s hurting education and our students. In fact, I intend to ramp-up.  Must be getting somewhere otherwise such an obvious, blatant slight would not have been made.

1.  I’m going to write to the paper pointing out my exclusion and suggesting people visit my website,

2.  I’m going to augment my website by publishing some education essays of the past year, and

3.  I’m going to provide brief digests of the essays with an angle on the incongruities of the issues discussed. I intend to use more ridicule to show just how cockeyed education is in BC.

Textbook Techniques Used to Subvert BCSTA

Essay #1: 090424

BC school trustees were meeting for their annual…tons of educators have gotten themselves elected as “civilians” to run the boards…no conflict of interest conditions prevent this in BC…a BCTF (teachers federation) ex-staff member parachuted in to trusteeship via election without declaring his background started an “activist” group, TAG (Trustee Action Group) to move trustees to pressure government….the scene is set…did the takeover happen?  To read the full story and comments and results, see the Blog, The Report Card by the education reporter for the Vancouver Sun, Janet Steffenhagen here:

BC Election - May 12, 2009

I’m running as a Libertarian candidate in the West Vancouver-Capilano riding.  Election May 12, 2009.

Below is the statement I made to the North Shore News for their upcoming election issue.

Tunya Audain, Libertarian

1. Your age? 71                2. Residence in riding? 35 years

3. Residence on North Shore? 35 years    4. Your campaign budget? $50.00 (estimate)

5. STV: Yes or no? Why?

Libertarians believe in limited government — simple, transparent, easy for citizens to monitor.  STV is complex, expensive, and open to deal-making and manipulation. Oppose STV.

6. Does too much power reside in the premier’s office?

Yes. Centralized government is big, expensive, bureaucratic, inefficient, monopolistic, out-of-touch. Devolve to smaller autonomous units. Education needs more choices, less union-government domination – more parent governance.

7. Deficit spending to stimulate the economy: Just how much can we afford?

Libertarians on the economy.  Basic principles:  First, do no harm; “Hair-of-the-dog” solutions (more government) are wrong. Bailouts, make-work projects, unfettered public service unions depress the economy.  Second, cut spending. Sunset Initiatives will reduce government.  Third, decriminalize marijuana. Stimulate more tax revenue from another legitimate BC industry. Fourth, NO deficit spending.

8. Is the carbon tax a good idea?

I’m not convinced that global warming or climate change is due to man-made abuses.  Fluctuations are probably adjustments in the environment and cyclical in nature.

8a. Are there better alternatives?

Yes.  Instead of taxing everyone: a) User Pay: those responsible for pollution taxed extra; b) Enforceable property rights, those affected from pollution sue for damages.

9.  Should we change campaign financing rules? If so, how.

Free speech in provincial elections is satisfactory.  It’s in municipal, particularly school board elections, where I’ve seen corruption.  Recently some teacher unions worked to bind trustees ahead of elections by asking candidates to sign pledges to support teacher issues in exchange for voting assistance.  This seriously compromises democracy – inappropriate influence-peddling!

10. Is there a case for private enterprise in health care?

Decidedly YES.  Present oppressive socialist health system is inefficient and criminal.  Long waiting periods contribute to avoidable deaths.  Private health care insurance should be available to all.  Recently, BCAA offered private health insurance, announced and withdrawn in ONE day, shows that powerful self-interest groups are behind the present no-choice system.

Noteworthy Libertarian Moments of 2008

NoteworthyLibertarian Moments of 2008

My best Libertarian moment in 2008 was my 15 minutes of fame as a defender of my “property” rights.  I had been growing watercress in the drainage ditch in front of my home for over 25 years, using it for soups, salads, pesto and sandwiches.  It’s very healthy and a free food, requiring no cultivation.

One early Saturday morning, as I sat reading my newspaper in the front yard, a silver older-issue Mercedes drove up and two women came out, pulled on rubber boots from the trunk, and proceeded to harvest the cress into plastic bags.  I said the cress was mine, and they challenged me and said it was public property, growing in a municipal ditch.  I said I planted it, and they said, NO, it just grows in ditches….Much shouting, and neighbors now on the street….but the “ladies” would not leave.  After a half hour they were gone.  I surmised they were collecting large amounts for market garden sale.

I wrote a letter to the editor of our local paper, but they felt this issue merited a story instead.  Please see:  Watercress a Popular Green in West Vancouver, Sept 14/08 front page story with a very nice photo. www.canada.com/northshorenews/news/story.html

As a result of the story I received phone calls about others in West Van having their watercress similarly poached.

My libertarian principles at play here are essentially Locke’s inalienable rights: Right to Life, Liberty, Property & Protest.  I felt since I had planted the stuff I had mixed my labor with this “land” and had a sort of “homestead” right to it.  Since it was being usurped, I felt I had a right to defend it and protest its poaching.  That was my instinctive reaction when I jumped out that morning.

My subsequent research brought forth the common law understanding of “riparian rights”.  From Wikipedia:

Under the riparian principle, all landowners whose property is adjacent to a body of water have the right to make reasonable use of it.

Answers to North Shore News Questions

Answers to North Shore News Questions
1. Your age?   71
2. How long have you lived in your riding?   33 years in West Vancouver
3. What is your budget for this campaign?   $500.00
4. Should voters vote for a party or a candidate?
Check out the party’s core values. Libertarians support freedom for the individual against the coercive, intrusive, expensive, expansive, wasteful state. Vote Libertarian for limited government.

Each individual has the right to live in whatever manner he/she chooses, so long as there is no violation of the equal rights of others.

5. Is Canada too soft on crime?       Yes. We need:
-1- Personal responsibility for violating the rights of others. Restitution to victims from fines, prison labor income, community service.
-2- Youth doing adult crime not to be excused from responsibility.
-3-.Victimless “crimes”, eg. drug-use, are health issues.
-4- Strong police forces, well-funded ,judicial systems, right to self-defense.

Those using guns in violent crimes should be punished severely, but those using guns to defend their lives and to deter aggressive criminals should never be punished for a natural response. We would repeal gun registration laws. Police who carry guns have no more rights than the public they serve.

6. What is key to protecting the Canadian economy?
Stop the progressive, incremental, steady, relentless expansion of statism.
-1- No subsidies/bailouts/favors for business.  They’re in it for the “risk”.
-2- Stop squandering taxpayer funds: for transparency, publish on-line ALL government cheques issued.
-3- Immediate use of “Sunset” provisions to eliminate redundant, antiquated laws/regulations.
-4- Reduce government spending.

We oppose government:
- intervention in the free market,
- restrictions on trade, contracts,
- monopolies  marketing boards,
- all tax-funded subsidies – whether to industry, business, education, science, arts, communication systems, individuals.
The only proper role here is to protect property rights, enforce contracts, adjudicate disputes not solved by mediation.

7. How worried are you about climate change?
I’m worried about pollution and degradation but trespass laws would rectify transgressions if private property rights prevailed.
I’m far more concerned about scare-mongering.  We need anti-indoctrination guidelines for captive school audiences. For example, 9 inaccuracies in Gore’s film must be presented along with the film in UK (see these quidelines on my website).

We reject government organized and brokered privileges, trade-offs, caps, quotas, dispensations, and other “big wink” deals that forgive polluters and degraders from accountability for pollution harming and violating individual rights.

8. Afghanistan’s occupation: Was it worthwhile?
Libertarians stand for the sovereignty of nations.  We don’t wish to intervene in foreign affairs or adventures. We are opposed to military participation in Afghanistan.
We believe in a strong military sufficient to defend Canada and its citizens from foreign invasion or aggression.  We oppose conscription but endorse voluntary service.

Regarding foreign despotism, Canada should use its voice to condemn violence to any peoples affected.  Canada should not prevent private persons or agencies from becoming involved in foreign aid.

9. Is Canada tied too closely to the U.S.?
I personally have deep respect for Americans and their history. The Declaration of Independence is a masterpiece of anticolonialism. We need to beware authoritarian tendencies of both our nations if we are to continue to live in freedom from statism and coercion.  We need more friendly discourse with our neighbors.

Current American financial crises are object lessons that we learn and benefit from.  How much of the meltdown is blamed on government intervention in banking, bailouts,  and other interference with the free market?  The market has its own discipline, corrections and warning-signals that empower individuals to make responsible choices.

Libertarians of the World Arise!

Libertarians of the World ……. Arise!

Whenever government becomes too oppressive, too greedy, or just plain questionable, libertarians emerge.  Whether these people take on the name of Libertarian, or Freedom Party, or support such efforts as taxpayer watchfulness or promote free markets, or home educate their children, they are all in the direction of practicing self-responsibility and self-government.

Countries that are seen as libertarian-leaning are New Zealand and Estonia. Alberta is the most libertarian-inclined province in Canada. Ask, on the Internet, the Question:  What countries have libertarian governments? And only one answer comes up, “The old United States of America.”

Libertarianism is a BIG movement.  Just start your search and you’ll be overwhelmed!

For an inspirational basic Introduction to the Philosophy of Liberty please see this art video (10 minutes), animation created by Kerry Pearson of Lux Lucre, a long-time member of our BC group (now deceased):  http://www.isil.org/resources/introduction.html

The largest libertarian presence, of course, is the Internet itself.  It is self-governing and by its services enables, empowers, and expedites people to pursue their self-interests without coercion or excessive cost.  It is also a powerful tool to monitor governments and their agents, their beneficiaries and supporters, their successes and abuses. It helps citizens to keep their governments honest and on-track.  This role of the Internet is just in its infancy in helping to  limit government.

Someone asked me during this campaign what is the first thing I would do if elected.  I said:  I would put together a list of all the laws and regulations and start work with others on putting a Sunset Closure on those that are obsolete and redundant.  Another of my efforts would be to enhance transparency of government spending by bringing in a check registry — publishing online all checks issued by government.

Some Libertarian Quotes from - http://www.lpboulder.org/quotes/

  • The more corrupt the state, the more it legislates. -Tacitus
  • Democracy must be something more than 2 wolves and 1 sheep voting on what to have for dinner. -J.Bovard
  • A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves. -Edward R. Murrow
  • Liberty is the only thing you cannot have unless you are willing to give it to others. -William Allen White

Answers to Post-Secondary Education Questions

Capilano Courier Questionnaire

Candidate’s Name: Tunya Audain

Riding:    North Vancouver

Party Affiliation:  Libertarian

1 – Where did you attend post-secondary education and what did you study?
University of Sask, BA, (Psychology)

2 - If elected, what are your three top priorities for post-secondary education?

Libertarians do not believe in government (taxpayer) subsidies or economic favors to any sector of society.  Limited government would mainly be involved in defense, police, justice and provisions against force or fraud.  Therefore, there would not be any participation in post-secondary education.

3 – Post-secondary tuition fees continue to increase and the cost of living, particularly in the Vancouver area, is high. Students are taking on greater debt with high interest payments. How will you alleviate this financial burden through the student loan program and the scholarship/grant system?

If students need financial help for tuition and living expenses this should be obtained from family and friends or the private sector in the form of donations, scholarships, private vouchers, loans, charitable organization help, or other independent means such as part-time jobs.

4 – Many people, including Capilano’s President Dr. Greg Lee, have advocated that Canada needs a federal Ministry of Post-Secondary Education in order to more effectively coordinate and monitor the progress and quality control of the country’s post-secondary institutions. Do you agree? Why or why not?

If you want to shackle Post-Secondary Education in Canada, then going the Federal level would accomplish inertia, bureaucratism, intrusions, regulations, hidden agendas and an ever-increasing establishment elite that feeds off the industry of education.  Please encourage Greg Lee to back off.

5 – Course accreditation is a big concern for students completing classes at Capilano, particularly those in degree programs. Currently, Canada does not have a national accreditation body and it is difficult for Cap students to have their courses and degrees recognized outside of B.C. How would you address this problem, if elected?

I would definitely encourage participation in credible private accreditation bodies that validate authenticity and quality of degrees, diplomas, credentials, etc.  and that have national or international status and credibility.

My Flyer at Iranian All Candidates Meeting

Though I was not invited to participate — I guess due to either being a small party, or lateness of my campaign — I was able to pass out my flyer as below:

L I B E R T A R I A N

-    Less government = more FREEDOM for
-    The individual
-    For business
-    For industry

Less government taxes means more money in your pocket

We do not support participation in foreign wars.
We support free speech, especially in electoral politics. Small parties or independents should not be excluded from having their voice heard.

Support for strong police forces, well-funded justice system, open immigration

Right to self-defense

Property Rights need legislation, in the Constitution, and in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
